Rethinking the Urban residential Building An Open Ideas Competition for Architecture Students & Young Professionals

Participants are asked to rethink a 7-10 floors residential building in an urban setting. They need to propose a design for a building that uses minimal energy to provide comfort for its users and inhabitants

Green, sustainable, low energy, zero energy or nearly zero energy buildings are terms used to define a specific approach to architecture.
Participants are NOT required nor expected to do energy simulation or any other software simulation.
Similarly, No Energy calculations are expected.

Hana Alamuddin

Principal at Almimariya Architect and Designers for sustainable Development

Beirut, Lebanon

Hana is a R.I.B.A. architect with Master’s degree from MIT, LEED AP ND.

Her practice (established 1999) involve projects in Lebanon and all over the MENA region.

She is a senior lecturer at AUB for more than 26 years. Excecutive committee member of APSAD (Assosiation pour la Protection des Sites et Anciennes Demeures) 19989-2008. Technical reviewer for the Agha khan award for Architecture for three consecutive cycles 1998, 2001 2004). elected Board member of the LGBC 2014


Ece Cakir Aidan

Director, CAS Architecture

Istanbul, Turkey

Ece has a M.Arch in Sustainable Environmental Design from the Architecture Association, AA, London, 2012

She has worked on a variety of design projects in Central America, the Middle East, Central Africa, and Turkey.

In addition to her architectural practice, she co-founded the Circle Academy in Istanbul and has worked as an instructor at Istanbul Bilgi University.

Ece was selected as a finalist in the category of ‘Best Architect' in the 2019 WICE (European Women in Construction and Engineering) awards.


Karim Elgendy

Associate, Dar Al-Handasah, Sustainability Architect

Karim Elgendy is an award-winning sustainability consultant based in London, with experience practicing design and sustainability in the United Kingdom, the United States and the Middle East.

Over the past two decades he has helped create sustainable buildings and urban environments across four continents, and has advised design and engineering practices, management consultancies, and think tanks.

Karim research interests include developing sustainable, resilient, and smart cities, and assessing the role of policy, urban planning, building design, and urban mobility in reducing the impact of cities on resources and the environment.

As a regular speaker and writer, Karim is a public advocate for sustainability. He is also regularly cited by mainstream media including the Financial Times, Reuters, Aljazeera, and Forbes, as well as academic publications. He is the founder and coordinator of Carboun, an advocacy initiative promoting sustainability in Middle East cities, and edits its online publication, the Carboun Journal.

Karim is the recipient of the 2013 Global Green Building Entrepreneurship Award by the World Green Building Council, and serves as a judge for the Middle East and North Africa region's annual green building awards.

Patricia Liñares Méndez

Researcher in Proyectopía Architects,
Professor in University of Vigo

Architect by the University of La Coruña in 2008, Arquia Prize in 2009,
Master of Science in Sustainable Environmental Design, Architecture Association (AA) London in 2011
PhD, Polytechnique University of Madrid in 2012 "Sustainable refurbishment of historic housing in Santiago de Compostela".

Patricia has a National and international professional experience in architecture offices such as Campo Baeza & Ateliers Jean Nouvel.

She is currently a Professor and researcher in the University of Vigo in Industrial Engineering and Energy Engineering schools since 2014. Also Professor at the National University of La Plata in Argentina since 2017.

Architect in Proyectopía since 2016, developing professional and researcher work on modular green architecture.

Winner of Gran de Area Prize in 2019 with the energy efficient retrofitting of Marqués de Valladares 5-6 in Vigo


Kartikeya Rajput

Associate Environmental Consultant, Urban System Design Limited

London, UK

Kartikeya has an M.Arch in Sustainable Environmental Design from the Architecture Association (AA), London 2014.

He is a visiting lecturer at the University of Westminster and a part of the external reviewing team for the Master's program in Environmental Design.
He also contributes as a technical consultant for BSc Architecture at Bartlett School of Architecture.

Kartikeya works as an Associate Environmental Consultant at Urban Systems Design and has worked on leading environmental design projects worldwide.
His recent projects have been recognized at prestigious platforms:
LSE-Centre Building has won BREEAM 2020 award in public sector category
Music School- Kings College School was shortlisted for RIBA National awards 2019.


Richard Saad

Therezia Sloet tot Everlo

Director, Studio 3A

Lisbon, Portugal

Therezia is a registered Architect in both Portugal OA (Ordem dos arquitectos) and the UK ARB, and a R.I.B.A architect. She has a M.Arch in sustainable Environmental design from the Architecture Association, AA, London, 2012

for more than 6 years (2014) she heads her own practice working on a variety of projects between the UK and Portugal. One of her latest project "Cabanas in Comporta" is nominated for best project by Archdaily


Rima Sorour Al Housseiny

Principal at Hints Design - Architecture & Sustainable Development

Saudi-Arabia & Lebanon

Rima Sorour has a wide multinational experience as an architect and designer. An author, activist and advocate for green buildings and environmentally responsible standards.
She is the Principal Architect/Partner at Hints Design – Lebanon since 1990.

The President of the Lebanon Green Building Council (LGBC) since 2019 and a board member since 2011. Founding President of 'Estidama Al-Hayat', targeting sustainability in multiple aspects since 2019. She is a consultant for the UNDP since 2014 and has a major research publication on Water conservation in Lebanon.
A co-developer to ARZ (Green Building Rating System) A Jury member in several national competitions & awards. Represents the Order of Engineers and Architects (OEA) at the Lebanese Standards Institute (LIBNOR) in Technical Committees; “Environmental Management” and “Building Environment Design”

Holds a B.Arch from AUB and a Specialized Diploma Degree in Sustainable Urban Management and Development from Erasmus University.
